Denne dvd-utgivelsen skulle egentlig bli gitt ut i 2005, men ikke før i slutten av 2008 var den å finne i butikkene. Opprinnelig skulle den hete ”Lunar Still/13 Years of Doom”, men det ble byttet til ”Lusitanian Metal” noe som jeg syns hørtes litt bedre og ikke fullt så komplisert ut. Moonspell har holdt på siden 1992, men den første albumutgivelsen kom ikke før i 1995 med ”Wolfheart”. Siden den 1995 har bandet gitt ut ni album der hovedingrediensen har vært black metal med gotiske elementer her og der.

At ”Lusitanian Metal” er en oppsummerende utgivelse over hva bandet har gjort fra 1992 til 2005 er ikke vanskelig å se om man bare snur coveret og ser på innholdet. Her er det to dvder der den ene inneholder en konsert fra Katowice i Polen fra 2004 pluss noen musikkvideoer, og den andre inneholder diverse audiovisuelle godbiter fra hele bandets karriere. Det er snakk om live-opptak og hele 52 ulike opptak har fått plass på dvden. Bandet har aldri gitt ut en dvd før, og det ser ut som når de først gjør det, så må de slå på stortromma.

For å gå litt dypere inn i innholdet så begynner jeg med konserten fra Katowice som virkelig er ganske bra. Lyd og bilde er godt produsert, og variasjonen av kameravinkler er bra. Bandet er i knallform og publikum er det samme. Konsertlokalet er fullt med folk som virkelig kan bevise foran kameraene at ”devil horns” er noe de kan.

Dvd nummer to inneholder live-opptak av ymse slag og kvalitet. Hvor gøy det er å se live-opptak av ekstremt dårlig kvalitet vet ikke jeg, men at det har en klar verdi for samlere og fansen kan jeg se for meg. Det er ikke slik at alle 52 låtene det er opptak av er av dårlig kvalitet. De fra Krakow i 1996 er pro-filmet, det samme gjelder releasepartyet for ”Darkness And Hope” fra 2001 også. I tillegg til disse er også ”With Full Force 10th Anniversary”-opptakene filmet og klippet av profesjonelle. Resten er så og si en-kameraproduksjoner med lite klipping.

Dette er en dvd-utgivelse som kanskje passer best for de som kjenner litt til Moonspell fra før og ønsker å se opptak av bandet som en ikke har sett før. Men har du ikke så mye kjennskap til Moonspell fra før, er Katowice-konserten som ligger på den Dvd 1 en ganske god introduksjonskonsert over hva Moonspell er for noe. Jeg liker denne dvd-utgivelsen ganske godt, selv om jeg kanskje ikke er den største fan av bandet. Man får hvertfall et godt inntrykk av hvordan bandet har forandret seg opp gjennom årene, fra å gå fra black metal til gothic metal og tilbake.

Dette er absolutt en god dvd-utgivelse som fortjener en god karakter.

This dvd release was supposed to be released in 2005, but it wasn`t in the shops until late 2008. Originally it was called “Lunar Still/13 Years of Doom”, but that was later swapped with the new title “Lusitanian Metal” which I prefer as it sounds better and is not that complicated. Moonspell have been playing since 1992, but their first release, “Wolfheart”, wasn’t out until 1995. From then until now they have delivered 9 albums, where they key ingredients have been black metal with gothic influences.

That “Lusitanian Metal” is a summary of what the band has been doing those 13 years, 1992-2005, is not that hard to notice if you just turn the cover and take a look at the back. There are two dvds here, one containing a consert from Katowice in Poland 2004 plus some music videos, and the other constituting of various audiovisual snacks from their career. We`re talking livefootage, a total of 52 individual songs actually. Never before have Moonspell released a dvd, and it looks as if when they first make one, they go all the way.

A closer look at the Katowice concert reveals a lot of really good things, that is needed on a live dvd release. Audio and video is well produced, and the variation of camera angles is quite good. The band is in a great shape, and so is their audience. By way of showing the crowded concert venue proves that the “devil horns” is something they know how to do.

Dvd number 2 contains a lot of random live footage, random both in quality and otherwise. How interesting it is to watch extremely low quality shots like this I do not know, but it`s clear to me that this is probably quite valuable for collectors and fans. And it`s not that all of the 52 clips have the same lousy quality. Those from Krakow 1996 are made by professionals, the same goes for the release party for “Darkness And Hope”, taken in 2001 and the footage from “With Full Force 10th Anniversary”. The rest is roughly speaking a one-man-one-camera-production with little to no editing.

Lusitanian Metal is a dvd release that might be most fitting for those that are already familiar with Moonspell and want to see some new “old” footage of them. But if you haven’t listened to the band before then the Katowice concert on dvd 1 is a pretty good introduction. I like this dvd release pretty well, even though I am not the bands biggest fan. At least you get a good impression of how the band has changed throughout the years, from black metal, to gothic metal and back again.

This is absolutely a dvd release deserving of a good grade!
