Tuomas Saukkonens nyeste prosjekt heter Black Sun Aeon. De ga nettopp ut sin debut skive “Darkness Walks Beside Me”. Sammenlignet med hans andre prosjekter (“Before The Dawn” og “The Final Harvest”) skulle Black Sun Aoen være mørkere, og mer personlig, som det også står på Myspace-siden hans. Vi var så heldige å få gjort et email-intervju med han, og dette er hva han hadde å si om den nye plata, og Black Sun Aeon prosjektet selv.

Black Sun Aeon ble starta I 2008, men dette er ikke det eneste bandet Toumas spiller i. Men  motivasjonen for dette bandet var heller spesiell.
- Jeg fikk lyst til å spiller mer doom aktig og tyngre saker enn det jeg kunne skrive til de andre bandene jeg spiller i nå. Jeg gikk gjennom noen temmelig mørke tider, og trengte et helt nytt band for å få ut alt det. Et band helt uten historie, med ingen forventninger fra hverken fans, eller plateselskap etc etc. Total frihet til å skrive et album for meg selv. I forhold til tidsfrister, planlegging og økonomi kan man vel si at det var en gal manns prosjekt, men jeg trengte å gjøre det.

Videre forklarer han mer om sitatet på myspace sida om hvordan albummet er mørkere og mer personlig, i følge han er det mest synlig i tekstene, som han sier er veldig personlige og vil helst ikke forklare dem videre. Senere forteller han oss at navnet «Black Sun Aeon» kort fortalt betyr «Mørkets Era», som jo passer til motivasjonen for bandet, og framtida for bandet er allerede planlagt, sangskrivings prossessen for neste skive er allerede i gang.

Tida derimot, som må sjongleres mellom hans forskjellige prosjekter virker som litt av en prøvelse, men han forklarer at selv om han spiller i tre band («Before The Dawn», «The Final Harvest» og da «Black Sun Aeon») så fikk han nok tid til dem alle.
- Mitt eget plateselskap har både BSA og TFH på sin rooster, og jeg booker også alle gigene for banda mine, så det jeg som setter agendaen, og det gjør det mulig for meg å beholde alle tre band aktive i studio, og på scena. Når jeg skriver sanger for banda går også dette veldig fort, jeg skriver omtrent 40 låter i året, så det er nok tid til å lage skrive og lage musikkvideoer til bandene også. Men noen ganger kunne det likevel vært greit om døgnet ble utvida til 30 timer.


På «Darkness Walks Beside Me» så er det flere gjestevokalister. Tomi Koivusaari fra Amorphis, Ville Sorvali fra Moonsorrow og Mynni Luukkainen fra Sotajumala. Alle har med sin egen stil, selv om arrangementet var klart før de ble med. Disse er store figurer fra store band, men det var likevel ikke noe problem å få dem med.
- Jeg har kjent alle folka bortsett fra Tomi, i mange år. Og han ble med etter èn mail, så gjestevokalen var lett å fikse. Jeg fikk akkurat de folka, og stemmene jeg håpte på. Tomi er en av mine barndoms idoler når det kommer til «mørk vokal», så det var en stor ære å få han med på albumet.

Totalt er det da 5 vokalister på skiva, og av dem vil 3 bli med på scena. Live vil vokalen bli håndtert av  Mikko Heikkilä,  Mynni Luukkainen, og Toumas vil gjøre en jobb fra bak trommene.

Videre spurte vi han om hvorfor det er slik at mange finske band (for eksempel Moonsorrow og Korpiklaani, for å nevne 2) trekker inspirasjon fra den finske historien og kulturen, når de skriver musikk.
- Jeg må si at mange band har det med å låte litt «finsk», og vi er stolte av landet vårt, men jeg har ikke merket at noen band har begynt få sånne «nasjonalistiske» tendenser. Vår historie er temmelig kort, Finland fikk uavhengighet i 1917. Vi er et melankolsk og kanskje litt dystert folk, omgitt av nydelig natur, og det kan høres i musikken vår.

Når vi spør om vi kunne få se «Black Sun Aeon» her i Norge kommer det klart fra han hadde ikke noe formål om å la bandet forbli i Finland.

Og jeg vil si at det er en sang som forteller deg hvor vidt du vil, eller ikke, like Black Sun Aeons' nyeste release. I tillegg er det info om kommende gig og mye annet.

Tuomas Saukkonen's newest project is called Black Sun Aeon. They just released their debut “Darkness Walks Beside Me”. Compared to his other projects (“Before The Dawn” and “The Final Harvest”) Black Sun Aeon was created to reflect something darker and more personal, as stated on his myspace page. We were lucky enough to get an email interview with him, and this is what he had to say about his new release and the band itself.

Black Sun Aeon began back in 2008, but this is not the only band Toumas plays in. The motivation for this one was rather special though.
-I got an "urge" to do more doomier and heavier stuff than I was able to with my current bands at that time. I was also going through some pretty dark times and needed a brand new band to get all that out. A band with no history, with no outsiders expectations from fans or label etc.  Total freedom to write an album for myself. When it comes to schedules, planning, money etc it was act of a mad/stupid man but I needed to do that.

Explaining further on the qoute on his myspace page about how the album are darker and more personal, he states that it's most noticeable in the lyrics. They are quite personal, he says, and would rather not explain them. Later he tells us that the name basically means the “The Era Of Darkness”, which makes sense considering what the band is about, and as for the future, the songwriting process for album number 2 is already in progress.

Juggling the time between his different projects may seem like quite the endeavor, but he states that even though he's working in three bands (“Before The Dawn” and “The Final Harvest” as well as “Black Sun Aeon”) he manages to get enough for them all.
-My own label has both BSA and TFH under it´s wings and I also book all the gigs for all of my bands so I am the one doing the schedules ,and that makes it possible to keep all 3 bands active in the studio and on the stage. Also the songwriting process for all bands is pretty quick and I write about 40 songs in a year so there is still enough time to write and direct videos for the bands. But it would be nice though, to get the day expanded to 30 hours.

Toumas has been active in the musical scene for several years now. It began when was little, and the creativity was with him from the very beginning. Only 4 weeks after he got his first guitar did he write his own songs, and he found it much more interesting to write and play his own stuff.

On “Darkness Walks Beside Me” there a several guest singers.  Tomi Koivusaari from Amorphis, Ville Sorvali from Moonsorrow and Mynni Luukkainen from Sotajumala. They all bring their own style to the album, even though the arrangements was completed before they joined in. These are prominent figures from prominent band, but getting in them onboard was not really a problem.
-I have known rest of the guys for many years except Tomi and he got on board
with one email so the featuring vocals were really easy to get together. I got just the guys and voices I hoped to get. Tomi is one of my childhood idols when it comes to "dark vocals" so it was a great honor to get him on the album.

The total number of vocalists on the album is 5, but onstage 3 will be handling the vocals. On the live performances by Black Sun Aeon, the vocals will be handled by Mikko Heikkilä, Mynni Luukkainen, and Toumas will also do his part from behind the drumset.  

Further on we asked him about Finnish culture and history, why it could be that a lot of their bands (like Moonsorrow and Korpiklaani to mention two) draw upon inspiration from this when it comes to their music.
-I must say that Finnish band have a habit of sounding "Finnish" and we are proud of our country but I haven´t noticed any movement in bands to get any "nationalistic" vibe on. Our history is pretty short and Finland got the independence in 1917. We are melancholic and a bit gloomy people surrounded by beautiful nature and that can be heard in the music.   

Upon mentioning that we wondered when we could see Black Sun Aeon here (Norway) he clearly states that he has no intention of staying “just” in Finland with the band.

I would recommend you do that yourself, a track from the new release (“Darkness Walks Beside Me” for those who just skipped to the bottom) is also out there for you lend a ear. In my honest opinion it's a song that will tell you whether or not you will enjoy Black Sun Aeon's newest release. There is also a list of upcoming gigs there to check out, among other stuff.
